It amazes me that in 2009 we’re still fighting for our rights to read whatever books we choose to. Censorship by the government has always been the hallmark of an oppressive regime, one that fears that their citizens will have access to dangerous ideas. But censorship by individuals is no less dangerous. By trying to force libraries to remove certain books, these folks are determining what you can and cannot read, what your children can and cannot be exposed to.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s Huckleberry Finn, Lady Chatterly’s Lover, or Harry Potter, no one has the right to decide what I should or should not read but ME. And that goes for my kids, too.
Lest you think this is a non-issue, this link goes to an interactive Google map showing requests for removal of books from public and school libraries from 2007-2009, according to the American Library Association.
I told my wife the other day that I thought the slang term “cougar” was already falling out of favor, but that won’t stop me from beating that dead horse one more time:

Electric Six covering Queen’s “Radio Ga-Ga”.
Is this offensive to Freddie Mercury? I gave it a lot of thought, and in the end decided Mr. Mercury probably would have gotten a kick out of it. In support of this position, let me present Exhibit A.
Clearly, Freddie didn’t take himself too seriously.
You can call it “Space Cruiser Yamato” if you want to, but those of us that watched it in the US knew it as “Star Blazers”. As much as I would like to decry the ongoing rape of my childhood, I just can’t bring myself to do so. After hearing the first few notes of the theme song, my heart starts pumping faster. I love seeing the Yamato breaking through the ice in such beautiful animation. And the wave motion gun? Awesome. I can’t wait for this.
