As a child I adored Spike Jones and his City Slickers. When I grew up, I realized what consummate musicians he had to have in his band, in order to be able to record the zany pieces that they did, and I admired them even more. When I look around at today’s musical personalities, no one can hold a candle to Spike.
Well, except for one guy. Wierd Al Yankovic is the true heir of Spike Jones.
Enjoy this medley of classic polka tunes.
Spike Jones and his band recorded songs directly to vinyl, no editing in most cases. It was just like a stage show to them, and they knew what they were doing. I’d like to see a modern pop group try that!
It must’ve been the 1st week of September, 1985. I’d just gotten out of the Army and was driving down from Anchorage, Alaska to Orlando. Made a pitstop in St. Louis.
Saw a tour bus with “Lost” as its destination sign above the windshield. Me and my co-pilot reckoned that anyone who’d do that has got to be worth seeing.
Turned out to be Weird Al. Great show.
PS: Miss Celania knows who you are!
I’m jealous.
